A Life in Illustration and Stage
Sir John Bernard Partridge was a versatile English illustrator and stage actor. Born in London, United Kingdom, he was the son of Professor Richard Partridge and the nephew of portrait-painter John Partridge. Before finding his greatest success in book illustration, he worked in the offices of architect H. Handsom and with the ecclesiastical designers Lavers, Barraud and Westlake. His artistic training included studying decorative painting under Philip Westlake.
Partridge was deeply connected to the theatre, performing under the stage name Bernard Gould and appearing in the first production of George Bernard Shaw's Arms and Man. This passion for the stage often informed his work, as many of his early drawings focused on theatrical subjects and personalities.
The Punch Era and Wartime Works
In 1891, Partridge joined the staff of Punch, eventually becoming its chief cartoonist in 1909. His long tenure with the publication lasted over fifty years, continuing until shortly before his death in London. His portfolio includes significant works from both World Wars, such as the recruitment poster Take up the Sword of Justice and the cartoon Unconquerable, which featured Wilhelm II and Albert I.
