The Life and Art of John Quinton Pringle
Born in Glasgow, United Kingdom, John Quinton Pringle was a Scottish painter who pursued his vocation alongside a career in business. After leaving school in 1876, he was apprenticed to an optical repairman, eventually establishing his own shop in Glasgow that offered optical and electrical repairs. While maintaining this business for over twenty years, he attended evening and Saturday morning classes between 1883 and 1888. His dedication to his craft was recognized in 1901 when he won a gold medal for life drawing at the South Kensington national competition.
Pringle's body of work includes approximately 100 pieces, many of which are small-scale oils on canvas. His subjects frequently drew from his immediate surroundings, including his family, friends, and local backcourts. During his career, he traveled to Normandy and spent summers on the Shetland island of Whalsay, producing various landscapes and sea scenes. In his later years, he produced portraits, some of which are miniatures.
Technique and Exhibitions
In his later works, Pringle employed a distinct technique, using paint dissolved in turpentine applied with short strokes from a square brush. This method, combined with a limited but intense palette, often resulted in a shimmering or luminous effect. His artistic reach extended beyond Scotland, as he exhibited at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London and the Vienna Secessionist Exhibition of 1902.
His notable works are held in various collections, including:
