A Master of the Mexican Baroque
Juan Correa was a distinguished Mexican painter of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, recognized as one of the most prominent artists in New Spain during his lifetime. The son of a physician from Cádiz, Spain, and a freed black woman, Correa was a highly productive religious painter. His career saw him create major works for significant locations, including the sacristy of the Cathedral of Mexico City, the Jesuit church in Tepozotlan, and the Chapel of the Rosary in the convent of Azcapotzalco. His artistic legacy extended through his family atelier, which included his brother José Correa, his nephews Miguel and Diego, and his grandsons Miguel and Diego.
His body of work, estimated at around 500 paintings, focused primarily on Catholic themes. His style is characterized by:
- A vibrant palette and elegant composition.
- An emphasis on decorative details.
- Subtle color gradations that provide a sense of iridescence and a mystical effect.
Artistic Legacy and Style
Correa is considered a main exponent of the Baroque style of painting in Mexico. His work helped New Spain attain a unique and unmistakable personality, breaking away from its Spanish lineage. His paintings often featured subjects such as the Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin and the Entry into Jerusalem. Some of his notable works, such as Allegory of the Holy Sacrament and The Guardian Angel, are held in the Denver Art Museum, while Angel Carrying a Cypress is part of the collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
