Artistic Practice and Performance
Julius Deutschbauer is an Austrian painter, author, and artist. His multifaceted practice includes the establishment of the Library of Unread Books, a project he has operated since 1997. This library is characterized by its presence in various new locations. In 2008, he founded the performance group Theater des Verhinderns. His work often centers on posters that parody political themes. Between 2011 and 2020, he co-organized an awards series titled "Suche die unpolitischste Theaterproduktion Wiens" with Werk X, which traditionally honored theatrical events but awarded the Austrian government in 2020. Additionally, from October 2022 to June 2023, he organized a series of reading demonstrations in various district museums in Vienna, where participants march through streets, parks, supermarkets, and cafes to read aloud from books.
Exhibitions and Publications
Deutschbauer's work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including "Antifaschismus Vergnügungspark" in Berlin and "Nur 100 Plakate" at the Museum für Angewandte Kunst Wien. Other notable exhibitions include "Der Bibliothekar" at Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Salzburg Villa Kast, and "Julius Deutschbauer: The Library of Unread Books II" at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York. His published works include Figur ohne Grund, Zwialoge, and 6 Künstler-Künstler-Reden. In 2024, he released the publications (noch kleben die plakate...). Plakate 1993-2024 and 213 Plakate. He was awarded the Großer Kulturpreis des Landes Kärnten in 2019.
