      Early Life, Family and Training

Born on July 29, 1898, in Essen, Germany, Kurt Lewy entered a family defined by commerce and creativity. He was the son of Gustav Lewy, a local merchant, and grew up alongside his brother, Fritz Lewy, who would also pursue a career as a graphic artist. This environment provided a foundation for Kurt Lewy to begin his formal explorations into the visual arts.

His academic training was marked by a period of intense study during the early decades of the twentieth century. Between 1919 and 1923, he attended the Folkwangschule in Essen. During these same years, he also sought instruction at the Staatliche Hochschule für bildende Künste in Berlin. This dual presence in both Essen and Berlin allowed him to absorb diverse influences during his formative years.

Beyond the traditional academic settings, Lewy sought out specialized technical mastery. He traveled to Pforzheim to learn the enamel technique, a skill that would later inform his varied approach to materials. This combination of formal institutional training and practical technical study shaped the versatile artist he would become.

      Life in Germany and Belgium

After establishing himself in the German art scene, Lewy held his first exhibition in 1926 at the Folkwangmuseum Essen. His professional standing grew as he took on a teaching position at the Folkwangschule Essen, contributing to the academic life of the city. However, this period of stability was abruptly severed in 1933 when he was dismissed from his post due to his Jewish origin. Seeking safety, he emigrated to Belgium in 1935, attempting to rebuild his life away from the rising hostility of Nazi Germany.

The onset of the Second World War brought renewed peril. Following the invasion of Belgium in 1940, Lewy was classified as an enemy alien and deported to France. His experience was marked by successive periods of confinement, beginning with internment at the Saint-Cyprien camp and later a transfer to the Camp de Gurs in Vichy France. He managed to escape custody in 1942, seeking refuge in the shadows of Brussels to avoid further capture.

The final years of the war brought him back into the grip of the authorities. In June 1944, he was arrested and held in the SS-Sammellager Mecheln. He remained in captivity until the camp was liberated by Allied forces. Following the war, he remained in Brussels, eventually acquiring Belgian nationality and finding a permanent sense of belonging in his adopted home.

      Technique and Artistic Style

Lewy’s creative output was defined by a restless versatility in medium. He moved fluidly between the delicate application of watercolor and the weight of oil paint, demonstrating a technical command over both the ephemeral and the permanent. His curiosity extended beyond the canvas to the tactile and the structural, as he mastered the precise art of enameling and the intricate demands of embroidery. This technical breadth allowed him to translate his vision into diverse forms, including the luminous medium of stained glass.

His visual language underwent a significant evolution throughout his career. He began his professional life working within the emotional intensity of Expressionism, using form to convey immediate feeling. Over time, his approach shifted toward Abstraction, moving away from representational clarity toward a more distilled, non-objective language. This transition reflected a deepening interest in the essential qualities of color and shape, stripping away the literal to find a more profound visual order.

This mastery of material and form eventually found a monumental application in his later years. His ability to manipulate light and color was particularly evident in his work for the Neue Synagoge in Essen, where he designed stained glass windows and a decorative Thoraschrein. Through these works, the lessons of his abstract evolution were applied to the architectural and the sacred, merging his diverse technical skills with a sophisticated understanding of light and space.
