The Artistic Evolution of Louise Fishman
Born in Philadelphia, United States, Louise Fishman was an American abstract painter who spent many years living and working in New York City. Her early career in the 1960s was characterized by the production of primarily grid-based work. As the feminist movement gained strength during the 1970s, she moved away from these minimalist-inspired, grid-like paintings to create work reflecting women's traditional tasks, utilizing repetitive steps similar to knitting, piecing, or stitching. Her compositions often combined gestural brushwork with an orderly structure, building layers upon interlocking layers.
In the 1980s, her large-scale works, such as Grand Slam (1985), were sometimes labeled by reviewers as having elements of neo-expressionism. Following a trip to Warsaw, Prague, and Budapest in 1988, Fishman began to investigate her Jewish identity. This period saw her mixing ashes from Auschwitz into beeswax to use in her paints for the Remembrance and Renewal series, creating works that served as both abstract art and memorials. In the early 1990s, she returned to painting grids in a slightly altered format, seen in works like Sipapu (1991) and Shadows and Traces (1992).
