      The lines of a life

Luc Peire began his studies within the walls of the Fine Arts Academies in Bruges, Saint-Luc, and Anvers. His early years were shaped by the heavy, expressive forms of Flemish expressionism, following the lead of Constant Permeke. In 1938, he held his first exhibition in Bruges, marking a beginning that would eventually move toward the heart of Paris in 1959. During the late 1940s, his path took him through Italy, Spain, and Morocco, periods of movement that preceded a deeper focus on geometry.

By the mid-1950s, the weight of figuration began to thin out. He moved toward structures built from networks of vertical lines. This period saw him engaging with others in the art community, forming connections that influenced his shift toward abstraction. In 1961, he helped establish the Mesure group, a space for shared exploration. His work became a study of balance and rhythm, often stripped down to the essential tension between light and dark.

      The vertical rhythm

The work of Luc Peire is found in the precision of his graphies. These pieces rely on contrasts and the careful placement of thick or thin lines, using striated stripes and horizontal ribbons to create a sense of mechanical or industrial dimension. He worked through etching processes and black-and-white techniques to find a specific kind of equilibrium. This approach, often called abstract verticalism, sought a spiritual quality through the repetition of upright forms.

His interest in space extended beyond the flat surface of a canvas. In the late 1960s, he created installations known as Environments. These works used mirrors to suggest an infinite continuation of his lines, making walls, floors, and ceilings part of a single, unfolding composition. Notable examples include:

      • Environnement I (1967), which was installed at the Musée Nationale d’Art Moderne in Paris.
      • Later installations from 1968 and 1973 that explored the concept of infinite space.

      Recognition and presence

Throughout his career, several awards marked his progress, including the Prix Godecharle in 1942, the Prix de Rome in 1947, and the Grand Prix d’Ostende in 1961. He also received the Prix Signal in 1963 for an experimental film titled Peche au Nuit, created with Henri Chopin.

His presence was felt in various international galleries and museums, from the Biennale de Tokyo in 1962 to exhibitions in New York, Rio de Janeiro, and Auckland. His work remains held in collections such as:

      • The Art Institute of Chicago
      • Musée Nationale d’Art Moderne, Paris
      • Museum of Modern Art, Mexico
      • Auckland Art Museum, New Zealand
      • Mu.ZEE, Knokke-Heist

He passed away in Paris in 1994, leaving behind a body of work defined by the steady, vertical pulse of his lines.
