      Early Life, Family and Training

Max Frey was born on April 16, 1874, in Mühlburg near Karlsruhe. He came from a family of merchants, a background that provided a stable foundation as he began to explore his creative inclinations. His formal education in the arts started at the Arts and Crafts school in Karlsruhe, where he first learned to handle his materials and develop a sense of design.

His training deepened when he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. He spent a decade at the academy, studying there from 1893 to 1903. During these formative years, he worked under the guidance of several notable instructors, including Ferdinand Keller, Gustav Schönleber, and Leopold von Kalckreuth. This period of study allowed him to refine his technical skills and establish the foundation for his later work as both a painter and a graphic artist.

Activity in Berlin, Frankfurt and Dresden

After completing his studies, Max Frey spent a brief period in Berlin working as a theater painter. This time in the city provided a practical foundation before he moved to Frankfurt in 1904. His life took a significant turn when he relocated to Dresden in 1906, a city that would become central to his professional identity.

By 1907, Frey had transitioned into the role of an educator at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. He taught classes focused on painting and graphic design, even establishing a new curriculum specifically for women. His influence within the academy grew steadily, leading to his appointment as a Professor in 1910. His presence in the Dresden art scene was marked by his active involvement in various local associations and groups.

      Artistic Movements and Style

Max Frey’s creative output shifted as the decades passed, reflecting the changing currents of German art. In his graphic work, he found inspiration in the flowing, organic lines of the Art Nouveau movement. This period of his life showed a particular interest in the decorative possibilities of print and line, capturing a sense of movement that defined the era's aesthetic.

As his career progressed into the 1920s and 1930s, his focus moved toward the Symbolism and New Objectivity movements. His paintings from this later period often leaned into the style of magical realism. This approach allowed him to blend a sense of the real with the dreamlike, creating scenes that felt both grounded and otherworldly. He used these techniques to explore themes that sat between the tangible world and the imagination.

      Notable Pupils and Artistic Groups

Frey’s influence extended well beyond his own canvas through the many students he mentored at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. He took a particular interest in teaching a newly created class specifically for women, where he guided Margarete Wendt and Margarete Kühn. These two women eventually went on to establish the firm of Wendt & Kühn. His classroom also saw the development of other notable talents, including Hans Grundig, Willy Wolff, and Oscar Cahén.

Beyond the classroom, Frey was deeply embedded in the professional art community of his time. He was an active member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund and the Dresden Art Cooperative. His commitment to collective artistic expression was further evidenced by his role as a founding member of the artists' group Grün-Weiß. He also helped establish the Dresdner Künstlergruppe 1913, ensuring his presence was felt within the evolving circles of German art movements.

      Later Years and Death

The final chapter of Max Frey's professional life was tied closely to the Academy, where he remained a constant presence until 1934. After leaving his teaching post, he sought a quieter existence and retired to Bad Harzburg. His personal life underwent significant changes during these later years; his marriage ended in divorce, and he eventually found companionship again. He married Editha von Froebel, a former pupil, who was considerably younger than him.

Max Frey passed away at home on 11 March 1944. His life ended in the midst of a turbulent era, leaving behind a body of work that transitioned from the decorative influences of Art Nouveau to the more structured observations of New Objectivity. He was laid to rest in a cemetery located in the Tolkewitz district of Dresden.
