Early Life and Artistic Training
Born in Schöningen, Germany, Otto Rodewald was a painter and graphic artist. His early education took place at the Helmstedter Gymnasium, though he often found himself drawn to the natural surroundings, where he made his first drawings while lying on the forest floor. His formal training began in 1909 at the Landeskunstschule Hamburg, where he studied for five years alongside Alexander Friedrich and Anne-Marie Vogler. During this period, he was a student of Carl Otto Czeschka, whose designs inspired his early graphics through their connection to the Vienna Jugendstil. In 1910, Rodewald earned second prize in a competition for the design of monograms and signets.
War, Travels, and Later Works
The experiences of the First World War, during which he served in a storm battalion, left a lasting impact on his work, specifically influencing his drawings, etchings, and woodcuts from 1918 and 1919. Following the war, he established an atelier in Hamburg. His travels later took him to the Mediterranean, Africa, and the Near East, including a period living in Sidi Bou Saïd, Tunisia, from 1929 to 1931. His artistic output included various works such as:
Rodewald was a member of the Hamburgische Sezession and helped found the Kunstclub "Die Insel." His works have been held in collections such as the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Altonaer Museum, and Griffelkunst e. V. Hamburg.
