A Legacy of Lineage and Light
Born in Schwalmtal, Germany, in 1871, Paul Windhausen entered a world where art was a family language. He was the son of the painter Peter Heinrich Windhausen, and his upbringing was shaped by the creative energy of a large family of artists. By 1873, his family had moved to Roermond, a place that offered a welcoming environment for those who lived to paint. This setting allowed Paul to grow alongside his brothers, Heinrich and Albin, both of whom followed the same path into the world of painting.
The family's presence in Roermond was deeply rooted in the local artistic community. For many years, Paul and his brother Albin shared a workspace, living and working side by side on the Kapellerlaan. Their collaboration was a significant chapter in his life, as the two brothers focused their talents on the intricate demands of church art. They spent their days in a shared studio, working together to fulfill the spiritual and aesthetic needs of their community.
The Shift Toward the Individual
By 1925, the close partnership between the brothers reached its natural end. Paul felt the weight of working under Albin's direction and sought a path that allowed for more personal expression. He moved to the Frans Douvenstraat, near the Cuypershuis, to establish a studio that was entirely his own. This transition marked a change in his focus, as he moved away from the collaborative demands of religious commissions to concentrate on the quiet dignity of portraiture.
His later years were defined by this pursuit of the individual face. He took on commissions that required a keen eye for character, such as his portrait of the Van Crugten-Cloquet couple. His work during this period reflected a desire to capture the essence of his subjects through a more singular, personal lens. His technical skill was recognized by the institutions of his time, with some of his works finding a permanent home in the collection of the Cuypershuis.
Throughout his career, his subjects included a variety of notable figures, such as:
- Jos. Schrijnen, the rector-magnificus of the Catholic University of Nijmegen
- Henricus Adolph Antoon Meuwissen, the mayor of Echt
- Jos Weber
- Paulus Mannens, the president of the grand seminary
- Guillaume Lemmens
A Life Cut Short
The personal life of Paul Windhausen was intertwined with the history of the region. He married Maria Hilgers in 1901, and together they raised a family that included several children. However, the stability of his life was shattered by the violence of war. On November 11, 1944, during the bombardment of the Munsterstraat in Roermond, Paul, his wife, and his youngest daughter lost their lives. His death remains a somber part of the history of Roermond, marking the end of a life dedicated to the observation of the human form.
