Early Life, Family and Training
Pierre Gauvreau was born in Montreal on 23 August 1922. His early years were shaped by the city's creative circles, and he eventually enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal in 1937. This period of study provided the foundation for his later work as a painter and writer. By 1939, he had become a member of the Contemporary Art Society.
Life took him away from the studio when he served overseas with the Canadian Army. Upon his return to Montreal, he went back to the École des Beaux-Arts for two more years of study. During this time, he shared a home with his brother, a writer. This domestic space would later become a significant site for the artistic community, serving as the location for an exhibition that helped define a movement.
Artistic Movements and Associations
His place in the Quebec art scene was defined by a quiet rebellion. He was associated with the dissident group Les Automatistes, a circle that sought to break away from established traditions. In 1946, he showed his work in the first Automatist exhibition held in Canada. This gathering took place in his mother's apartment, a space he shared with his brother. It was during this specific exhibition that the group first became known by the name Les Automatistes.
His commitment to these ideas was more than just visual. He was a signatory to the Refus global manifesto, a document he helped bring into the world by typing and printing it himself in his own apartment. These pages contained reproductions of his recent paintings, linking his physical actions to his artistic stance. Later, in 1961, he helped found The Non-Figurative Artists' Association of Montreal, continuing his involvement in the shifting landscape of Montreal's art community.
Film and Television Production Career
During the 1950s, Gauvreau moved into the technical and creative spaces of television production. He spent much of this decade working across various aspects of the medium. In French-Canada, his name became familiar through the series Temps d'une paix, a production that helped establish his presence in the broadcasting field.
His work later took him to the National Film Board. While there, he took on the role of producer for the 1971 film Mon Oncle Antoine. This period of production work was a significant part of his professional life, separate from his canvas work. His contributions to the screen were recognized in 1990 when he received the Prix Gemeaux, Grand Prix, an award for his film and television work.
Technique, Style and Later Years
The brushwork in his paintings often carries a gestural and calligraphic quality. These marks move across the surface with a sense of directness. In his later years, the application of paint shifted toward a texture that appeared lace-like. This delicate, intricate appearance emerged from a long history of working with form and movement.
During the 1990s, he began to experiment with new tools and methods, including the use of spray paint. This experimentation did not move him away from his roots; instead, he continued to paint through 2005, remaining true to his Automatist beginnings. He remained active in his practice until his death from heart failure at the age of 88.
