A Life Rooted in the Danish Landscape

Poul Ekelund lived a life deeply connected to the soil and sky of Denmark. Born in 1921, he spent his early years growing up in Copenhagen before eventually finding a more quiet existence in the village of Mønge in North Zealand alongside his wife, Birthe. His surroundings were not merely backdrops for his work but active participants in his creative process. In 1961, he purchased a summer cottage in Vangså, and it was during these later summers in North Jutland that his connection to the natural world reached its most profound state.

His social circle was composed of fellow creators, including artists such as Ejler Bille, Harald Leth, and Anna and Erik Thommesen. These friendships helped shape a shared artistic environment. Ekelund also contributed to the art community by co-founding Martsudstillingen, known as The March Exhibition, an association that remained active for over thirty years.

The Language of Color and Form

Ekelund’s approach to painting was marked by a specific way of seeing. He did not seek to create exact replicas of the world around him. Instead, he focused on the relationship between people and the earth. His work often explored themes of symbiosis, where the boundaries between human presence and the environment began to blur. In his paintings, a person might become part of the landscape's color scale, much like the workers in his piece Høstlandskab.

His technique relied on several distinct methods:

      • A pointillist approach that used small patches of color to build form.
      • Quick and abrupt brushstrokes that captured a sense of movement.
      • The use of serial repetition, where he would revisit the same motifs, such as boats on a beach or rows of trees, to create rhythm.

This repetition brought a sense of order to his canvases. Whether he was painting a simple portrait, a road, or a field of corn, there was a rhythmic quality to how he arranged elements like clouds or sheaves of grain. His style sat within the realms of Modernism and Postimpressionism, using color patches to define the weight of a tree or the stillness of a room.

A Lasting Presence in Danish Art

Between 1944 and 1975, Ekelund produced approximately 60 paintings that continue to be held in significant collections. His work is found in institutions such as the Vendsyssel Kunstmuseum, Holstebro Kunstmuseum, and the Museum Thy / Heltborg Museum. These collections preserve his vision of the Danish landscape, from the coastal scenes of North Jutland to more intimate, domestic subjects.

Even in his simpler works, such as a portrait of a lobster on a platter or a person seated in a room, there is a focus on the interaction between life and its surroundings. His ability to find a sense of calm through structured composition remains a defining feature of his legacy. He passed away in 1976, leaving behind a body of work that reflects a deep, quiet observation of the world.
