A Life of Military Service and Art
Pierre Henry Prosper Baccuet was a French military officer and landscape painter. Born in Paris, he was the son of a merchant. His military career began in 1813 when, before the age of sixteen, he enlisted as a quartermaster in the artillery train of the Garde Napolitaine. He eventually rose through the ranks to become a Sous-lieutenant in the line infantry. Following the fall of Joachim Murat, he served in the 7e régiment de chasseurs à cheval and later the Grenadiers on Horseback. By 1827, he had attained the rank of Lieutenant. After the July Revolution, he served in the 10th Regiment of cuirassiers and was promoted to captain. He participated in the Ten Days' Campaign of 1832 and received the Legion of Honour in 1833 before retiring in 1846.
Artistic Pursuits and Orientalist Landscapes
Parallel to his military duties, Baccuet studied landscape painting under Louis Étienne Watelet. His first exhibition at the Salon took place in 1827. In 1828, his talents led to a position as an official painter with the Morea Expedition, which provided him with numerous sketches and landscapes. Between 1841 and 1845, he served in North Africa as a painter and draftsman with the Commission d'exploration scientifique d'Algérie, participating in an expedition to Kabylie. His work from this period includes landscapes, ancient ruins, and scenes of the French conquest of Algeria.
His later Salon exhibitions featured Mediterranean landscapes of Italy, Spain, and North Africa. His illustrations were used in the Exploration scientifique de l'Algérie 1844–1867. His works are held in several public collections, including:
