A Life of Lines and Lithography
Born in Gaillac on May 7, 1870, Raymond Tournon lived a life defined by the precision of the surveyor and the fluid grace of the illustrator. His early years were marked by a move to Paris in 1877, where he attended the Lycée Arago before finding his true calling within the walls of the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Under the guidance of Alexandre Cabanel, Tournon developed a technical foundation that would later support his diverse career as a painter, lithographer, and poster artist. He was a man of varied disciplines, balancing his artistic pursuits with roles as a mathematics teacher and a surveyor for the Paris land registry.
His professional path was never singular. While he practiced fine art, he also navigated the commercial demands of the Belle Époque, designing advertisements for automobiles, spas, and the cinema. He contributed to various publications, including Le Journal Pour Tous, where he debuted as a humorous artist in 1898, and later worked for magazines such as La Vie Amusante and L'Épatant. His work often bridged the gap between high art and popular culture, ranging from delicate lithographs to more whimsical comic strips like Les Aventures de Guénola et de Gulduc.
The Art of the Poster
Tournon’s graphic output remains his most visible contribution to the visual landscape of his era. He possessed a particular talent for the poster, using color and composition to capture the spirit of contemporary life. Some of his notable lithographic works include:
- L'Aurore/Fecondite, an 1899 work that remains one of his most recognized designs.
- L'aurore f'écondité par Emile Zola, a color lithograph from 1895.
- Port-Aviation / Grande Quinzaine de Paris, a 1909 poster.
- Le Petit Parisien, La Chanson du Printemps, a color lithograph.
His ability to work across mediums allowed him to move between the structured world of geometry and the imaginative realms of fantasy and melodrama. He produced strips such as Myrtil, la Princesse au Doigt Magique and La Vengeance du Mandarin, demonstrating a versatility that saw him moving from the technical accuracy required in land registry work to the storytelling demands of the press.
Final Years in the South
The later years of Tournon's life were shaped by both personal change and physical necessity. Following medical advice, he moved his family to Villefranche-sur-Mer in the South of France. This period saw him preparing for a significant exhibition under the guidance of Charles Cottet, and he had previously exhibited at the Salon des artistes français in 1914. He passed away in Villefranche-sur-Mer on February 17, 1919, at the age of 48. His legacy is found in the printed archives of French illustration and the enduring charm of his lithographic designs.
