The Formative Years and Roman Sojourn
Rémy Vuibert was a French painter whose early life remains somewhat shrouded in mystery. While his exact birth date is subject to debate, he was born in Rethel, France. His training likely took place in Troyes or Paris, and he eventually entered the studio of Simon Vouet. Between 1635 and 1637, Vuibert resided in Rome, where he became acquainted with Nicolas Poussin. During this period, he produced several engravings after the works of Raphael, including compositions from the Vatican's Raphael Rooms and various allegorical figures. His Roman studies also included works after the compositions of Domenichino and Guido Reni.
Return to France and Decorative Mastery
Upon returning to France in 1637, Vuibert began a prolific career, particularly in the realm of large-scale decorative frescoes. He was appointed as a "peintre ordinaire du roi" and was tasked with assisting Poussin on the decoration of the Grande Galerie of the Louvre. His expertise in perspective and decorative schemes led to significant commissions, including works for the Château de Tanlay and the Hôtel d'Avaux. One of his most notable and certain surviving works is the ceiling of the choir of the Visitation convent in Moulins, which depicts the Assumption of the Virgin. Vuibert died in Moulins in 1652.
