A Life Between London and India
Born in Kingston upon Hull, England, Robert Home grew up as the son of an army surgeon. His early years were shaped by the traditions of London, where he began his formal training under the guidance of Angelica Kauffman. This mentorship provided him with a foundation in the classical styles that would later inform his work. In 1769, he entered the Royal Academy Schools to refine his skills further. His path then led him to Rome, where he lived and studied from 1773 until 1779, absorbing the artistic atmosphere of Italy before returning to work in Dublin and London.
The year 1790 marked a significant change in his life when he left for the Indian subcontinent. He arrived during a period of intense historical movement, following Lord Cornwallis' army during the Third Anglo-Mysore War. This transition from the structured environments of Europe to the varied landscapes of India changed the focus of his brush. He moved through cities such as Madras and Calcutta, eventually settling in Lucknow, where he served as a court painter for Nawab Ghazi-ud-Din Haider.
The Art of Observation
Home’s work was defined by a deep attention to detail and a desire to document the people and places he encountered. While he was a skilled oil portrait painter, his interests extended far beyond the faces of high-ranking officials. He possessed a keen eye for the natural world, producing 215 watercolours that captured Indian mammals, birds, and reptiles with anatomical accuracy. His ability to use glazing techniques allowed him to render textures, such as the sheen on a leaf or the strength of an animal, with great clarity.
His output was diverse, ranging from formal portraits to historical scenes and topographical studies. Some of his notable subjects included:
- The Hostage Princes leaving home with the Vakil
- Ghulam Ali and Lord Cornwallis Receiving Tipu Sahib's Sons
- Ruins of Mahabalipuram
Beyond the canvas, Home applied his sense of design to physical objects. He worked on creating regal crowns, ornate furniture, howdahs, carriages, and even pleasure boats. This versatility showed an artist who was deeply integrated into the material culture of the era.
A Lasting Record
The historical importance of Home's work lies in its role as a visual record of a changing era. Through his landscapes and portraits, he documented the architectural grandeur and the everyday life of the Indian subcontinent during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. His collections of watercolours and oil paintings provide a window into the social and natural history of the regions he visited.
Much of his legacy is preserved in major institutions today. His drawings can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, while other pieces are held by The Asiatic Society in Kolkata. He passed away in 1834, leaving behind a body of work that remains a primary source for understanding the landscapes and figures of his time.
