The Dual Life of a Maker
Thomas Samuel Haile lived a life split between the daylight world of clay and the nocturnal realm of the subconscious. Born in London, UK in 1909, he spent his early years working for a shipping firm while attending evening classes at the Clapham Art School. This period of quiet labor preceded a formal education at the Royal College of Art between 1930 and 1935. While he initially sought to master painting, he found himself drawn toward the pottery school under the guidance of William Staite Murray. This shift in focus defined much of his physical output, yet his internal drive remained tethered to the canvas.
His existence was marked by a rhythmic, almost restless, oscillation. During the day, he worked as a ceramics teacher at the Hammersmith School of Art, shaping clay with a steady hand. As an insomniac, his nights were spent in a different state of being, immersed in surreal painting sessions that emerged from the darkness. This duality created a tension between the decorative precision of a potter and the unsettling imagery of a surrealist. Much of his work was lost to time, either during his move to America in 1939 or in a fire that struck his widow's pottery in 1957.
A Fragmented Legacy
The physical remains of his output are few, leaving behind a slim, concentrated body of work that speaks to a life cut short. Only twelve canvases are known to survive, and many of these have found their way into permanent collections. His presence in the art world was felt through specific exhibitions and associations:
- The British Surrealist Group
- The Artists International Association
- The London Gallery on Cork Street
- The Brygos Gallery on Bond Street
His death in a car accident in Dartington, Devon, in 1948 ended his career while he was still establishing his footing in both ceramics and painting. He was thirty-eight years old. Despite the scarcity of his paintings, his work has appeared in major surveys of British Surrealism, appearing in exhibitions at the Hayward Gallery and the Manchester Institute of Contemporary Art.
The Weight of the Object
There is a specific gravity to the works that remain. His 1938 piece, The Severed Mamma, held in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, reflects the unsettling logic of the surrealist movement. He was a man who moved between the tactile, grounded nature of pottery and the fluid, often disturbing landscapes of the mind. While he was often viewed through the lens of his skill as a potter, he remained, in his own view, a painter. This distinction is felt in the way his imagery refuses to settle into simple decoration, instead opting for the strange and the unexplained.
