A Life Between Landscapes and Light
Born in 1852 at Blindern in Vestre Aker, Norway, Sigrid Louise Bølling moved through a world of significant connections. As the daughter of landowner Jacob Chr. Bølling and Baroness Adelaide Johanne Thekla Isidore Wedel-Jarlsberg, her early years were rooted in a certain social stability. She was also the half-sister to the explorer Fridtjof Nansen. While many women of her era found their ambitions curtailed by domestic expectations, Bølling sought formal training far from her Norwegian home.
Her education began in Copenhagen during the early 1880s. There, she studied under painters such as Frank Hemingsen, Bernhard Middelboe, and Peter Severin Krøyer. These formative years provided the technical foundation that would later allow her to navigate the competitive art circles of France. She did not merely observe the changing styles of the late nineteenth century; she actively participated in them.
The Parisian Years
By the mid-1880s, Bølling had established herself in Paris, a city she would call home for fifteen years. This period was marked by intense study at institutions like the Académie Colarossi and the Académie Julian. She learned from a diverse array of instructors, including Léon Bonnat, Raphaël Collin, and Henri Gervex. Her presence in the French capital was not merely that of a student; she eventually became a teacher at the painting schools of Louis-Marie-Adrien Jourdeuil and Gervex, even running her own studio in Paris.
Her work during this time reflected the influences of French salon realism and the practice of outdoor painting. She often traveled to the French countryside, seeking subjects in Brittany, Normandy, and Savoie. These excursions yielded honest depictions of rural life, focusing on the quiet dignity of peasants and the natural light of the landscape. Notable works from this era include:
- Fatiguée. Bondekone fra Normandie (Tired. Farmer’s wife in Normandy), 1888
- Den gamle brønn i Concarneau (The Old Well in Concarneau), 1886
- En Melkekone (A Milkmaid), circa 1888
- The Old Citadel in Dieppe, 1894
Recognition and Later Years
Bølling’s ability to capture the essence of her subjects earned her place in prestigious exhibitions. She first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1885, a milestone that brought international attention to her skill. The French state even purchased her painting Fiskeri i Norge, and she was honored with the title of Officier d’Académie Française. Her reach extended beyond France, with exhibitions in Lyon, Nantes, and Rome, as well as participation in the 1889 World Exhibition in Paris.
As her life progressed, Bølling moved through different European landscapes, including long stays in Italy between 1904 and 1907. She eventually returned to a more northern existence, living in Copenhagen from 1909 until her death in 1917. Her legacy remains held in significant collections, such as the Norwegian National Museum, which preserves works like Fatiguée. She left behind a body of work that bridged the gap between the realism of the rural North and the impressionistic light of the French provinces.
