The Quiet Observer of Bornholm
Søren Kjærsgaard did not follow the path his father had laid out. Born in 1935, he spent four years as an apprentice to a manufacturer, a trade intended to lead him into the world of commerce. Instead, he turned toward the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, entering its doors in 1956. By 1958, he had moved to Bornholm, settling for twenty-three years in a defunct family farm in Østermarie. While many of the painters on the island sought to capture the landscape and the light of the sea, Kjærsgaard’s gaze was often turned inward or toward the human form. He lived among the soil and the stone, yet his work remained focused on the weight of a figure or the stillness of a composition.
Layers and Figures
His paintings often rely on simple, layered compositions. There is a certain stillness in how he placed his subjects, whether they were living people or the ghosts of art history. He was drawn to the portrait, seeking to capture the essence of a person through a controlled, deliberate arrangement. This interest extended to the old masters, whom he approached with a sense of playfulness or a subtle, unexpected twist. He did not merely replicate them; he reinterpreted them. One might see a depiction of Chardin with a goat, or a version of Goya, rendered with a specific, quiet intent. Even his more provocative works, such as his depiction of Betty Nansen, suggest a man interested in the tension between the formal and the startling.
His technical approach was marked by:
- A preference for portraiture and figure paintings.
- The use of simple, layered compositions.
- A focus on the human form over the natural landscape.
- An interest in the interplay between classical subjects and unexpected elements.
Recognition and Legacy
The art community in Denmark recognized the steady development of his hand. He was a member of both Grønningen and Koloristerne, groups that defined much of the era's visual language. His exhibitions took him beyond the shores of Bornholm, reaching Reykjavik, Oslo, and Paris, as well as the halls of Charlottenborg. In 1983, he was awarded the Eckersberg Medal, and by 1986, he had received a lifetime grant from Statens Kunstfond. Much of his work remains in the hands of those who preserve the history of the island, with many pieces held by the Bornholms Kunstmuseum and others in the Statens Museum for Kunst. He passed away in 2009 and was laid to rest at Holmens Kirkegård in Copenhagen.
