The Artistic Evolution of Uwe Lausen
Uwe Lausen was a German painter and printmaker. His early work, presented in West Berlin in the early 1960s, demonstrated a gestural-figurative approach. During this period, he was associated with the artist group SPUR and was a member of the Situationist International until 1965. His creative path underwent significant shifts, moving from an experimental phase involving collage and assemblage toward a focus on close-up views of the body.
In the mid-1960s, Lausen developed a realistic style characterized by the brutal tematization of violence. These works served as pictorial documents of the political climate in the Federal Republic of Germany. As his life moved toward isolation, his painting style became more reduced. His later compositions often featured solitary, lost-looking motifs—such as sinks, chairs, and tubes—placed within large color fields on mostly empty canvases.
Life and Legacy
Born in Stuttgart, Germany, Lausen's life was marked by intense creative and personal transitions. He studied philosophy and law at the University of Tübingen and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich before turning to painting. He was married to the artist and photographer Heide Uta Stolz, with whom he had two daughters, Lea and Jana.
His professional engagements included exhibitions at the Galerie Springer in West Berlin and the Galerie Friedrich & Dahlem. His artistic output eventually ceased in 1969 after he was unable to complete a stage design for a production at the Schauspielhaus Zürich. He died in Beilstein, Germany.
