Life and Artistic Development
Born in Passau, Germany, Wilhelm Niedermayer spent his childhood on the Englburg, the estate of his uncle and grandfather. This landscape of the lower Bavarian Forest left a lasting impression on his experiences and later influenced his choice of residence and subject matter. After attending the Oberrealschule in Passau, he studied agriculture at the TU München-Weihenstephan, graduating in 1921. His artistic training began at the Münchener Zeichen- und Malschule Moritz Heymann, where he studied figure, portrait, and landscape painting under Joseph Herrmannsdörfer and Peter Trumm.
Niedermayer’s work was shaped by a tension between Impressionism and Expressionism. His studies in Paris during 1926/1927 were particularly decisive for his style. Throughout his career, he sought to bridge these two movements, a characteristic visible in his atmospheric landscapes and portraits. His oeuvre often focused on the hills, forests, and mountains of the Bavarian and Bohemian Forest.
Exhibitions and Memberships
Niedermayer’s first exhibition at the Munich Glaspalast brought him public recognition in 1927. His travels included visits to East Friesland, Worpswede, Bohemia, Italy, and Dalmatia. He was a member of the Münchener Künstlerbund from 1926 until its dissolution in 1938, and later joined the Neue Münchener Künstler-Genossenschaft in 1951. He was also a founding member of the Donau-Wald-Gruppe.
