Early Life and Artistic Training
Wilhelm Otto Pitthan entered the world on September 17, 1896, in Wöllstein, Germany. His early inclinations toward the visual arts led him to the Mainzer Kunstgewerbeschule, where he began his formal studies in 1911. This period of academic formation was abruptly interrupted by the onset of war. From 1914 to 1918, Pitthan performed military service, a hiatus that delayed the progression of his technical development.
Upon his return to civilian life, he sought to resume his artistic education, enrolling in Frankfurt/Main in 1919. This phase of his training was characterized by a broadening of perspective through travel. In 1923 and 1924, he traveled to Italy, followed by a trip to Paris in 1925. These excursions allowed him to observe different European traditions firsthand, shaping the observational skills that would define his later output.
Career and Major Commissions
While his early professional efforts were focused on the quietude of landscape painting, a shift in his subject matter occurred following the 1927 portrait of Gustav Stresemann. This single work opened a door to a prolific period of portraiture, as the depiction of the then-Reichskanzler led to a steady stream of high-profile commissions. His ability to capture the likeness of significant figures eventually brought him into the orbit of the highest levels of German political life. This was evidenced by the acquisition of his 1938 portrait of Joseph Goebbels by Adolf Hitler, a work that secured his position within the era's official artistic circles.
As his reputation for capturing the human countenance grew, Pitthan moved toward more diverse academic and civic subjects. He was sought out to portray notable intellectuals and officials, including the cartographer Hermann Haack and the Rector of the Medical Academy Erfurt. These assignments demonstrated a technical versatility that extended beyond the political sphere into the realms of science and administration.
In his later years, his work took on a more monumental character through civic engagement. The city of Mühlhausen commissioned him to produce three large-scale paintings centered on the theme of Thomas Müntzer. These works, which included Thomas Müntzer predigt (1958) and Müntzer setzt den Ewigen Rat ein (1960), represented a significant departure from the intimate scale of his earlier portraits, moving instead toward historical narrative on a grander stage.
Later Years and Artistic Activity
Following his time in Cologne and Berlin during the National Socialist era, Pitthan’s life took a decisive turn toward Thuringia. It was here that he married in Schlotheim and established a permanent atelier. This move represented a deliberate search for a new beginning, as he transitioned into the life of a freelance painter. His focus remained largely on the human form, with his ability to capture the vitality of living faces earning him significant recognition in later exhibitions.
His later output included large-scale commissions that moved beyond simple portraiture into historical themes. In Mühlhausen, he worked on significant paintings regarding Thomas Müntzer, including Thomas Müntzer predigt (1958) and Müntzer setzt den Ewigen Rat ein (1960). While some of these large-scale efforts remained unfinished at the time of his death, they demonstrated the breadth of his technical ambition. His final years were spent in the quietude of Schlotheim, where he continued to paint until he passed away on November 20, 1967.
Where to See the Works Today
The physical presence of Pitthan's output remains scattered across the regions where he lived and worked. In Schlotheim, his paintings can be found within the Schloss zu Schlotheim. These works reside alongside the private collections that hold pieces from his long career.
Mühlhausen serves as another significant location for his surviving art. The Mühlhausen Museen houses the large-scale work titled Thomas Müntzer predigt, which was completed in 1958. Another significant piece from this period, Müntzer setzt den Ewigen Rat ein, is located in the Rathaushalle of the same city. These works represent the final major commissions of his life, some of which remained unfinished at the time of his death in 1967.
