The Allure of Sensation: Exploring Hans Makart's "Geschmack"

To stand before Hans Makart’s Geschmack is to step directly into a dream spun from opulent color and exquisite sensuality. Painted in 1879, this oil on canvas masterpiece transcends mere depiction; it is an immersion into the very essence of refined experience. The work, currently gracing the halls of the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna, remains a potent testament to the height of Academic Art blended with a distinctly romantic flair. Makart, whose career spanned the vibrant cultural currents of the late 19th century, captured not just a moment, but an entire state of being—a delightful intoxication of the senses.

A Tapestry of Life and Nature

The visual narrative unfolds around a central figure: a woman portrayed with breathtaking grace, seemingly entwined with the vibrant life force emanating from nature itself. She is depicted near a tree adorned with richly colored red leaves, holding onto its branches as if in a playful ascent or a gentle embrace. The composition is alive; it pulses with the energy of lush foliage and the interplay between human form and botanical splendor. Beyond the central interaction, other figures populate the scene, suggesting a larger, convivial gathering—a tableau vivant brimming with untold stories. It is this masterful orchestration of elements that gives the painting its undeniable sense of playfulness and whimsical narrative quality.

Symbolism Woven into the Brushstrokes

At the heart of this sensory feast lies potent symbolism. The inclusion of a visible apple near the center acts as an immediate focal point, drawing the viewer's eye and inviting layers of interpretation—a nod perhaps to temptation, nourishment, or the sweet culmination of experience itself. As part of a series exploring the five senses, Geschmack (Taste) directs our attention toward gustatory pleasure, yet Makart expands this concept outward. The vibrant palette and the lushness surrounding the figure suggest that taste, for him, is inseparable from beauty, vitality, and the sheer joy of existence.

The Technique and Enduring Allure

Makart’s signature style, the Makartstil, shines through in the painting's technical brilliance. His command of color was legendary; here, it manifests as a rich, saturated glow that seems to emanate from the canvas itself. The oil paint is applied with a richness that allows the foliage to appear almost tangible, while the skin tones retain an ethereal luminosity. For those who appreciate historical artistry or seek decorative pieces imbued with deep cultural resonance, owning a reproduction of Geschmack offers a unique opportunity. It allows one to bring home not just a painting, but a piece of Viennese artistic history—a celebration of elegance and refined living.
