Jo tėvai, prancūzi protestantai, pasitraukė į Geneveją po 1685 m. Liotardos meninė kelionė prasidėjo po profesorų Danielio Gardelle ir Petitoto vadovavimu, kurių emalį ir miniatiūras jis meistriškai atkartodavo.meninė karjera
Liotardos kelionės jį vedė per įvairias Europos sostines, įskaitant Paryžių, Romą, Stambūlą ir Vieną, kur jo portretai buvo itin pageidaujami. 1725 m.
