A Life of Lines and Lore

Born in Paris in 1801, Adolphe Desbarrolles lived a life that moved between the visible world of paint and the hidden meanings found in the palm of a hand. His early years were shaped by formal studies that eventually led him away from France for three years in Germany. When he returned to his home city, he began working as a painter, a lithographer, and a writer. He also contributed a series of articles regarding the art of fencing to the pages of Le Figaro.

His interests were never confined to a single discipline. While he practiced the fine arts, he became deeply absorbed in the study of chiromancy. This fascination with palm reading transformed his reputation from a mere painter into a figure associated with the mysteries of human destiny. He was a man of many layers, finding connection through both his brush and his belief in the secrets written in skin and bone.

      Connections and Legacies

Desbarrolles moved in circles where the boundaries between art, literature, and the occult often blurred. He maintained a friendship with Alexandre Dumas, famously predicting that the writer would live to be 104 years old following a reading of his palm. He was also a pupil and friend of Éliphas Lévi, who acknowledged him within the pages of Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie.

The influence of his work extended to his family. His daughter, Marthe Desbarrolles, followed in his footsteps by becoming a graphologist, carrying forward the study of characters through written lines. This shared interest in the science of reading marks a significant part of his personal history.

The Written Word and Final Rest

Much of what remains of his intellectual contribution is found in his published writings. His most notable work, Les mystères de la main révélés et expliqués, appeared in various forms throughout the mid-19th century, including editions in 1844, 1860, and 1862. These texts sought to explain the art of knowing life, character, and destiny through the inspection of hands.

Adolphe Desbarrolles passed away in Paris on 11 February 1886. He was laid to rest in the Père Lachaise Cemetery, a place where his life's work and his connection to the mysteries of the hand remain part of the historical record.
