      The Painter of the Turf

Laeken, 1920. A life begins that will eventually bridge the gap between the grit of the racetrack and the stillness of the canvas. Albert-Joseph-Léon Demuyser, known to many as Bob, moves through a world defined by the thundering pulse of thoroughbreds. He is not merely an observer; he is a participant. As a racehorse owner and a gentleman rider, his hands know the texture of the reins and the weight of victory. The dirt of the track and the blue-and-white star pattern of his racing silks are as much a part of his identity as the brushstrokes he would later master.

The transition from the saddle to the easel is not a sudden break but an evolution of sight. He is a self-taught painter, an autodidacte who finds his subject in the natural anatomy of the horse. His gaze settles on the musculature and the movement of animals, particularly those of the racing circuit. There is no room for abstraction here; he seeks the truth of the form. His work period, spanning from 1980 to 1997, captures a specific era of equine excellence.

      The Canvas and the Thoroughbred

The studio becomes an extension of the hippodrome. Using oil on canvas, Demuyser translates the kinetic energy of the race into frozen, natural-looking images. He does not rely on academic training but on a deep, lived understanding of his subjects. His paintings, such as Prince Rose and Norcliffe, carry the weight of real horses with real histories. The influence of Christine Picavet lingers in the way he approaches the animal form.

His repertoire is a catalog of champions:

      • Prince Rose
      • Gap of Dunloe
      • Shirley Heights
      • Noblequest
      • Chief Singer
      • Knight Moves

The recognition comes from the very circles he inhabits. An exhibition at the Hippodrome de Chantilly, sponsored by Hermès International, places his work alongside the most talented animal painters of the genre. His paintings are not mere decorations; they are portraits of athletes.

A Life of Resistance and Sport

Beyond the gallery walls, the man carries the scars of a much harsher reality. During the Second World War, Demuyser serves as an estafette for the Mouvement national belge. He endures the deprivation of being a prisoner of war at Stalag V-A. These years of conflict provide a stark contrast to the later, more tranquil years spent documenting the grace of horses in Belgium and abroad.

His dual legacy remains tied to the turf. Even as his reputation as a painter grows, his achievements in horse racing continue to command respect. He wins the Grand Prix de la Ville de Nice in 1974 and the Prix d'Hédouville in 1982. The same man who captures the spirit of a horse on canvas is the one seeing them cross the finish line first. He passes away in Uccle in 2003, leaving behind a body of work that remains anchored to the earth and the animals he loved.
