      Early Life, Family and Training

Alfred Partikel was born on 7 October 1888 in Gołdap, East Prussia. He was the son of Adolf Partikel, who worked as the district court secretary in Gołdap. His early years were spent in this region, and he attended school in Insterburg. These formative years in East Prussia provided the backdrop for a life that would eventually lead him toward the coast and the academic circles of Germany.

His formal training began in the academy of arts in Königsberg, where he studied from 1905 to 1907. This period of study laid the foundation for his technical development. Seeking to expand his perspective, he moved to Munich in 1908, and later to Weimar in 1910. In Weimar, he attended the Weimar school of arts, a move that marked a significant step in his development as a painter.

      Life and Activity in Berlin

Partikel arrived in Berlin in 1911, seeking a place within the city's shifting artistic circles. He spent a decade here, working through the years that preceded and followed the Great War. His time in the city was marked by a steady engagement with the Berlin Secession, where he found a place among the avant-garde. He moved through these circles, maintaining connections with the painters and thinkers who defined the era's changing tastes.

The war interrupted this period of urban life. He served in the German Army during World War I, a time that physically and mentally separated him from his studio practice. When the conflict ended, he returned to Berlin. He resumed his place within the city's creative landscape, continuing to navigate the tension between traditional forms and the newer movements emerging in the wake of the war. His presence in Berlin during these years was defined by this constant movement between the quiet of the studio and the noise of a changing society.

      Life and Activity in Ahrenshoop

In 1921, Partikel moved to Ahrenshoop on the Baltic Sea. This move brought him into the circle of Max Pechstein's artist's Colony of Nidden. His life there became closely tied to his marriage to Dorothea Körte, a relative of Martin Körte. The landscape of the coast and the light of the Baltic became the quiet center of his daily existence. He found a way to live that was deeply connected to the local surroundings, establishing a permanent base for his painting.

The work he produced in this period often reflected the specific atmosphere of the coast. His paintings captured the light and the shifting moods of the seaside environment. In 1937, his artistic output faced a different kind of scrutiny when his works were classified as entartete Kunst. This designation placed him in opposition to the prevailing political climate of the time, yet he remained rooted in the coastal life he had built.

      Key Works and Output

His brushwork often sought a sense of healing through the landscape, a pursuit that became more pronounced as he settled into the coastal light of Ahrenshoop. In 1920, he produced Landschaft mit Figuren, a work that captures the quietude of the terrain. This period saw him exploring the relationship between figures and their surroundings, such as in Frau mit Pferd from 1921. These compositions often relied on a careful balance of light and form to ground the viewer in the specific atmosphere of the Baltic coast.

The year 1922 brought Landschaft mit Regenbogen, a painting that uses the arc of a rainbow to frame a scene of domestic and natural connection. It is a work that looks back toward older traditions, using a vertical and horizontal arrangement to organize the space of the landscape. His later output continued to engage with the changing seasons and the specific textures of the northern terrain, from the warmth of Spätsommertag in 1932 to the colder, starker tones found in Tauschnee in Masuren in 1938.

      Later Years and Disappearance

The final months of Partikel's life were marked by the chaos of war. In February 1945, he left Königsberg, traveling by bicycle toward Ahrenshoop. This movement was a flight from the advancing front, a quiet departure toward the Baltic coast.

His presence in the landscape ended abruptly in the autumn of 1945. On 20 October 1945, while picking mushrooms in the woods near Ahrenshoop, he disappeared. He was never seen again, and his remains were never found. The woods kept his secret, leaving only an absence where a man once walked.

A memorial stone now sits in Ahrenshoop to mark where he was last known. It remains a quiet fixture in the landscape he once painted, a physical reminder of a man lost to the forest.
