A Life Shaped by Line and Light
Born in Diksmuide, Belgium, Andreas Vanpoucke began his relationship with art in his earliest years. His hands were busy with oil paints long before he entered formal training. From 1975 to 1982, he studied at the fine art school in Ghent, where his curiosity led him toward the technical intricacies of engravings, drawings, and oil paintings. He found himself drawn to the works of Rembrandt, Degas, and Ensor, finding inspiration in the figurative traditions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This period of study laid the foundation for a career that would bridge the gap between classical technique and personal expression.
His dedication to the craft led him to a professorship at the Graduate School St. Lucas, Karel de Grote Hogeschool in Antwerp, Belgium, where he began teaching in 1983. As a Professor of Fine Arts in drawing and painting, he shared his knowledge of these fundamental disciplines. His work during these decades was prolific, often manifesting in numerous art calendars commissioned by cultural organizations in cities like Blankenberge, Koksijde, Handzame, Bruges, and Saint Remy de Provence.
The Shift Toward the South
Travels through Portugal eventually led him to discover the landscapes of France and Provence. This discovery prompted a significant change in his life, and in 1997, he chose to settle in Saint Rémy de Provence. The light and geography of this region became central to his creative output. His work began to reflect the surroundings through various series and exhibitions:
- Large oil paintings focused on "Les Calanques" and "Les Baux de Provence"
- The "Saint Rémy daily" exhibition held in 1999
- The "wall of tenderness" shown at the APart international festival
- The "Le Midi en Noir et Blanc" etching cycle started in 2012
While his oil paintings often captured the essence of the French landscape, he remained deeply connected to his Belgian roots. In 2006, his focus shifted toward the city of Antwerp and its inhabitants. This period saw the creation of "The Mosaic of Antwerp," a massive undertaking involving over two hundred 30×40 cm acrylics that sought to capture the multi-faceted face of the metropolis.
Technique and Versatility
Vanpoucke’s practice is defined by a refusal to be limited to a single medium. While oil remains a primary tool, his hands are equally comfortable with the precision of an etcher. He has produced a wide range of works including drawings, watercolors, and etchings. His printmaking, particularly his dry point work, shows a commitment to the physical process of making art, often resulting in limited edition prints that require careful, manual labor.
His exhibitions have spanned from the ancient De Beuckelaer atelier in Antwerp to the village of Barbizon. Whether working on a large-scale oil canvas or a delicate etching, his approach remains rooted in the formal training he received in Ghent. His presence in the art world is marked by this balance between the academic rigor of a professor and the observational eye of a traveler who finds meaning in the specific details of a place.
