      The Seaman's Eye

Before he ever held a brush to canvas to capture the fury of the Atlantic, Andrew Winter knew the sea from the deck of a ship. Born Andres Jüri Winter in Sindi, Estonia, his early years were shaped by the salt and the wind. He spent his youth as a seaman, working on square riggers and later serving as a mate on American and British steamships during the Great War. This intimate, often dangerous relationship with the ocean provided him with a perspective few painters possess. He did not merely observe the water from a safe distance; he had felt its weight and its power against the hull of a vessel.

When he eventually turned his focus toward the fine arts, he brought this maritime grit to his studies. After becoming an American citizen in 1921, he sought formal training at the National Academy of Design in New York City. His hunger for knowledge led him across the sea to the studios of Paris and Rome, and later to the specialized schools of Cape Cod and Long Island. These years of study refined his ability to translate the raw, physical reality of the coast into a structured visual language.

      The Light of Monhegan

By the late 1920s, the rugged coast of Maine began to exert a pull on his spirit. He and his wife, the artist Mary Taylor, eventually made Monhegan Island their home. It was here, amidst the granite cliffs and the relentless tide, that his true subject matter took hold. He was a man who sought the truth of a place through its most difficult moments. He would row his boat through the harshest seas, braving the spray and the wind to find the exact light that defined a rocky outcrop or a lonely cottage.

His work from this period is defined by a specific, quiet strength. He focused on the following elements of the Maine landscape:

      • The geometric architecture of coastal buildings against a heavy sky.
      • The stark, white clarity of winter snow covering the island.
      • The dramatic, unyielding presence of cliffs and rocks.
      • The absence of human figures, leaving the landscape to speak for itself.

In 1940, he built the Edison Studio on Lighthouse Hill, a space designed specifically to capture the northern light he so dearly needed for his work. He carved the decorative trim himself, ensuring every detail of his workspace reflected his devotion to his craft. This studio became a sanctuary for his vision, a place where the chaos of the weather outside met the controlled, deliberate application of paint within.

A Legacy in Salt and Oil

The paintings he produced during the 1940s, such as his depictions of Monhegan in the snow or the silvery light of the coast, reveal a man obsessed with the structural essence of nature. His compositions often mirrored the starkness of the environment, utilizing clear lighting and a sense of solitude to create a powerful sense of place. His ability to capture the weight of the atmosphere earned him recognition in prestigious circles, including exhibitions at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Salmagundi Club.

Though he passed away in a nursing home in Brookline, Massachusetts, his connection to the sea remained unbroken. His remains were either scattered into the waves or interred on the island he spent so much of his life documenting. He left behind a body of work that remains deeply tied to the granite and the mist of the Maine coast, a record of a man who understood the ocean as both a laborer and a poet.
