Early Life, Family and Training
Antonio Mohedano was born into a family with established ties to the administrative life of Andalusia. While he was a native of Lucena, Spain, his family connections linked him closely to Antequera, where his father served as a magistrate. This dual identity meant he was often described as a resident of Antequera despite his origins in Lucena. These early years provided a stable foundation before he began to pursue the life of a painter during the Renaissance period.
His formal training began in Córdoba, a city that was becoming a significant center for artistic development. In 1577, after the painter Pablo de Céspedes returned to the city following his time in Italy, Antonio Mohedano sought out his mentorship. This period of study was essential in shaping his early understanding of composition and form. Under Céspedes, he learned the technical skills required to navigate the evolving artistic landscape of the late sixteenth century.
As he moved into his professional life, his work often involved practical applications of his craft. He began his career by painting sargas and leathern hangings, which were large fabric decorations used to adorn the rooms of the era. These early commissions allowed him to establish himself as a working artist, moving through different cities and religious houses as he sought new opportunities for his pencil.
Technique and Style
Mohedano’s early professional life was defined by practical, decorative tasks. He began his career working with sargas and leathern hangings, creating large fabric paintings intended to decorate the rooms of his contemporaries. These early efforts provided a foundation for his transition into more complex religious works and large-scale compositions.
His artistic direction shifted significantly after he encountered the frescoes of Julio and Alessandro in Granada. He was also deeply moved by the frescoes of the Perolas at El Viso. This admiration was not merely passive; it was a driving force that led him to study and copy many figures from their works. By adopting the styles he observed in these monumental paintings, he developed a way of rendering human forms that reflected the influence of these masters.
This process of imitation and adaptation allowed him to move from simple decorative hangings to the creation of devotional frescoes. His ability to translate the styles of the great fresco painters into his own work helped him secure commissions for significant religious spaces, including the sacristy of the Cathedral of Córdoba.
Later Years and Death
The middle and later years of Mohedano's life were marked by a sense of movement. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly where he resided during his most productive decades, as he likely moved from city to city. His life was often tied to the religious institutions of the time, as he found work moving from one convent to another. This nomadic existence allowed him to find new commissions wherever his pencil was needed, following the demand for his skill across different locations.
Eventually, Mohedano returned to his roots. He spent his final years in Lucena, the town where he was born. During this period, he focused his efforts on the local community, providing a significant work for the high altar of the principal church in Lucena. This final chapter of his life brought him back to the place of his origins, where he remained until his death.
