      A Life in Bologna

Barbara Sirani lived her life within the walls of a family workshop in Bologna. She was born into a household where the scent of oil and pigments was a constant presence, being the daughter of the painter Giovanni Andrea Sirani and Margherita Masini. Her upbringing was shared with her sisters, Anna Maria and Elisabetta, all of whom learned to handle a brush under their father's guidance. In 1666, she married the musician Giovanni Francesco Borgognini.

The studio was a place of shared labor. Barbara trained alongside her siblings, absorbing the techniques passed down through her father's lineage. Her later works often carry the name Barbara Sirani Borgonini, reflecting this union. She remained active in the city until at least 1689, when a date recorded on an altarpiece in Trebbo di Reno marked her continued presence in the craft. She passed away on February 18, 1692, at the age of fifty-one.

      The Work of the Studio

Her hands worked with various subjects, moving between historical narratives and religious scenes. She found success painting biblical and mythological stories, often focusing on the details of the figures involved. Much of her surviving output consists of altarpiements created for churches throughout Bologna. In the early years of her career, she spent time making copies of the paintings produced by her sister, Elisabetta.

      The subjects she chose included:

      • Historical narratives
      • Biblical stories
      • Mythological tales
      • Portraits
      • Allegorical portraits of her sister

One specific piece, The Holy Family with Saint John the Baptist, was painted in 1659 using oil on copper. This small-scale work shows the precision required when working on such a tight surface. Her ability to translate large-scale religious themes onto smaller supports allowed her work to find its way into various collections.

      Artistic Roots and Legacy

The foundation of her style was laid by her father, who had been an assistant to Guido Reni. Through this connection, the traditions of the Bolognese school were present in every stroke she made. She also learned from the example of her sister, whose fame brought attention to their family's collective skill. Barbara contributed to a specific era in Bologna where women were able to practice painting professionally within the family structure.

Her role was part of a larger family enterprise that included teaching and managing commissions. While she worked within the shadow of her sister's reputation, her own hand is visible in the altarpieces left in the churches of her home region. She helped maintain a lineage of female painters that defined a particular moment in the history of Italian art.
