The Life and Training of Ben Benn
The trajectory of Ben Benn begins in Russia, where he was born in 1884. His early years lead him toward the formal discipline of the National Academy of Design. Between 1904 and 1908, he focuses on the rigorous study of drawing and painting, honing the technical foundations that would define his later output. This period of instruction marks the transition from student to a practitioner of the craft.
A significant shift occurs in 1907. The Artists' Gallery hosts "Oils by Eight American Artists," an exhibition that marks Benn's first public showing. This moment places his work within the context of the American avant-garde. He emerges as a pioneer American artist, moving through the evolving landscape of the early twentieth century. His presence in the art world persists for decades, spanning from his formative studies to his death in 1983.
Notable Works and Collections
The canvas captures a specific era of American life through his varied subjects. In 1917, he produced Coney Island, an oil on canvas measuring 20" x 16". By 1924, his focus shifted to the urban grit of Manhattan in 23rd and 2nd Ave, New York City. This work, an oil on board, depicts a dimly-lit street scene where a horse-drawn food cart moves past a group of men on dirt roads.
His presence in major institutions remains steady. The New Britain Museum of American Art holds five of his works. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, new york, also maintains a piece in its collection, specifically his 1941 Still Life.
