      Early Life and Artistic Beginnings

Born in suburban San Jose, California, in 1968, Chris Johanson grew up immersed in a specific kind of California youth culture. His early years were defined by the rhythm of skateboarding and the energy of punk rock shows. These formative experiences helped shape a perspective that was both dry and sharp, often expressed through a sense of humor that would later find its way into his visual language.

Johanson did not follow a traditional path through art school or formal academies. Instead, he learned the mechanics of applying color and shape through practical, hands-on labor. He picked up his technical skills by painting houses and decorating skateboards, finding a way to make a living while developing his hand. This DIY approach meant his education was found in the streets and the suburbs rather than a classroom.

During the early to late 1980s, he became a prominent figure in the 'zine community. He published a skateboarding and art publication called Karmaboarder, which allowed him to experiment with his own ideas and connect with others in the underground scene. This period of self-publishing helped establish the foundations of his identity as an artist, long before his work reached a wider audience.

Activity in San Francisco and Portland

In 1989, Johanson moved to the Mission District in San Francisco, a neighborhood that would become central to his life and creative development. He spent time at City College of San Francisco from 1989 until 1992, while simultaneously embedding himself in the local art scene. This period saw him becoming a key member of the Mission School, a group of artists rooted in the city's street culture and folk art traditions. His presence in the community was felt through various outlets, from drawing cartoons on lampposts and bathroom walls to his involvement in the local music scene. He played in a band called Tina, Age 13, a group that eventually released several records, including the LP Good Feelings.

His connection to skate culture also deepened during his years in San Francisco. In 1994, he contributed to one of the initial board graphic runs for the San Francisco-based skateboard brand Anti-Hero. This work helped bring his specific visual language to a much wider audience beyond the local streets. His life in the city was a mix of these various subcultures, blending the DIY energy of zine making and punk rock with a growing reputation in the fine art world.

In 2004, Johanson and his wife, Jo Jackson, moved to Portland, Oregon, where they bought a home. This move marked a new chapter after his years of establishing himself within the San Francisco art community.

      Technique and Artistic Style

Johanson’s approach to making art is rooted in a DIY ethos that feels deeply personal and unpretentious. He often avoids traditional canvas, choosing instead to source wood from scrapyards or the street to serve as his surface. This preference for found and recycled materials allows him to weave urban themes directly into his work, often incorporating elements of graffiti and street culture. His drawings, prints, and paintings carry a lo-fi spirit, reflecting a hand that is naive and direct rather than formally trained. He uses color relentlessly, applying it in a way that creates a sense of abstract positivity, even when the subject matter touches on more complex human experiences.

There is a constant movement in his work between figuration and abstraction. He uses shapes and figures to communicate sincere ideas about compassion, the environment, and how people coexist. This balance allows him to create a visual language that feels both grounded in the real world and part of a larger, more cosmic narrative. His work often takes the form of large-scale installations, such as his outdoor sculptures that invite people to interact with the environment in unexpected ways.

      Key Works and Museum Collections

Johanson’s presence in public spaces often takes the form of large-scale interventions that invite people to look closer at their surroundings. In Village Park, he created a twenty-foot-tall inflatable question mark that floats above the area. He has also worked with physical structures to change how people interact with a landscape, such as the three doors he placed in Lincoln Park. These doors feature customized frames and handles, appearing in bright colors to offer a sense of possibility to those walking by.

His smaller, more intimate works have found their way into significant permanent collections. The illustration Everything that happens is because of the sun is held in the collection of the Honolulu Museum of Art. His pieces are also part of the public collections at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Hammer Museum, and the Ackland Art Museum.
