The Painter of Ibiza's White Walls
Vicent Ferrer Guasch emerged from the quiet, agricultural landscape of Sant Antoni de Portmany, a place where the rhythms of fishing and farming still dictated the pace of life. His early years were marked by an instinctive connection to the medium, having begun painting canvases at the age of nine under the encouragement of his father. Before he ever sought formal training in Barcelona, the foundations of his vision were laid in the studio of Narcís Puget, a local figure who provided the essential tools for a young talent to observe the world.
His path was not a straight line through the academies. The turbulence of the Spanish Civil War and personal bouts with illness, such as typhus, frequently interrupted his studies and forced him back to the shores of Ibiza. These interruptions, however, did not stall his development. While he moved between Barcelona and his home island, his work began to absorb a variety of influences, ranging from the early Impressionist light reminiscent of Sorolla to the more structured, geometric sensibilities found in the works of Giorgio de Chirico.
A Study in Light and Form
The evolution of his style moved from the soft, intuitive Mediterranean light of his youth toward a more deliberate construction of space. In his earliest period, around 1930, his work possessed a warm, experimental quality, utilizing mixed media and oil to capture scenes like shipyards at rest. As he matured, he entered what many identify as a "white period," a phase where the architecture of Ibiza became his primary subject. He focused on the stark whiteness of traditional walls, the simplicity of volumes, and the interplay of light and shadow against the island's unique landscape.
His technical approach shifted as well. While he experimented with encaustic techniques in his early years, oil eventually became his definitive medium. This allowed him to achieve a post-impressionist clarity, where the geometric arrangement of space and the weight of architectural masses took precedence over mere naturalism. His paintings often captured:
- The stark, volumetric simplicity of Ibicencan houses.
- The specific luminosity of the Mediterranean sun against whitewashed surfaces.
- The structured landscapes of his native island.
A Life of Teaching and Tradition
Beyond the canvas, Ferrer Guasch was a fixture in the educational fabric of Ibiza. He spent decades as a drawing professor at the Instituto Santa María de Ibiza, holding the position from 1962 until his retirement in 1982. He also served as the institute's director for several years, ensuring that the next generation of artists had access to formal instruction. His commitment to the local art scene was further evidenced by his role as a co-founder of Grup Puget, an initiative designed to promote the work of Ibiza's painters in honor of Narcís Puget.
His reach extended far beyond the Balearic Islands. He exhibited his work in major Spanish cities such as Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Valencia, and Madrid, and took his vision to international audiences in Switzerland, Germany, and the United States. Despite this global exposure, his heart remained tied to the local landscape, earning him a place in collections such as the Museu d'Art de Girona. He left behind a body of work that remains deeply rooted in the specific light and stone of his birthplace.
