      1888 - 1954

The early years in Bavaria and Munich

Fritz Schaefler began his path in Eschau, Bavaria, where he was born on 31 December 1888. His hands first learned the precision of lines through architecture, studying at the Technical University of Munich in 1905. This structural foundation stayed with him as he moved into more fluid forms of expression. By 1906, he was part of the School of Arts and Crafts, and later, in 1908, he entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts to study under Angelo Jank.

His studio life in Schwabing and his time spent at Lake Chiemsee shaped much of what he put onto the canvas. He worked with a late impressionist-naturalistic style, focusing on the light and textures of the landscape. In 1920, following the shifts in Munich's political climate after the Räterepublik, he found himself at Lake Chiemsee. His movements were often dictated by the changing seasons and the locations that offered the right light for his work.

      A life moved by change

The years between 1921 and 1927 saw him moving through different German cities. He painted a series of works in Hamburg in 1921 before eventually settling in Cologne in 1927. His personal life was marked by both stability and loss. He married Vera Linzen, the daughter of writer Clara Ratzka, and they had a son, Hannsotto. After the death of his first wife, he later married Elisabeth Höffken.

The weight of history pressed heavily upon his career. During the National Socialist era, his work faced direct interference. His paintings were taken from museums and placed in the Degenerate Art exhibition. The war brought further displacement, forcing him to flee Cologne for the Bergisches Land region to find safety from the bombs. He eventually returned to a quiet life in Cologne, where he lived until 24 April 1954.

      Artistic presence and legacy

His work was not kept hidden from the public eye during his active years. In 1915 and 1916, his pieces were included in the Secessions in Berlin and Munich. These exhibitions allowed others to see his approach to the naturalistic style he had developed through his training.

The traces of his life and work remain in the following details:

      • Style: Late impressionist-naturalistic painting and graphic art.
      • Education: Technical University of Munich, School of Arts and Crafts, and Royal Academy of Fine Arts.
      • Key Locations: Eschau, Munich, Hamburg, and Cologne.
      • Historical Note: Works were included in the Degenerate Art exhibition.
