The Artistic Life of Han Bijvoet
Henricus Alphonsus (Han) Bijvoet was a Dutch artist born in Amsterdam. He received his training at the School voor Bouwkunde, Versierende Kunsten en Kunstambachten in Haarlem and later studied at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten as a student of Antoon Derkinderen and Rik Roland Holst. After completing his education in Amsterdam, he established himself in Haarlem. His diverse body of work included:
Bijvoet preferred the term glass painter over glazier, as his practice focused more on the act of painting than the construction of the windows themselves. He believed that art's sole purpose was the glorification of creation and the refinement of humanity, maintaining that an artist should resist becoming a slave to their time or modern conceptions.
Sacred Works and Commissions
Throughout his career, Bijvoet contributed extensively to religious spaces, most notably through his work for the Nieuwe Bavo in Haarlem. His commissions there included stained-glass windows, wall paintings, wood carvings for burial niches, chandeliers, and stations of the cross. His stained-glass works spanned several decades, including:
His portfolio also features stained-glass windows for the Sint-Janskerk in Haarlem, the Sint-Petruskerk in Leiden, and the Vredeskerk in Amsterdam. Beyond ecclesiastical settings, he created a memorial plaque for ten war victims in the Haarlem city hall. Bijvoet was a member of several organizations, including the St. Bernulphusgilde and the Haarlemse Sociëteit Teisterbant.
