A Visionary of Form and Color

Henri Titselaar was a man who lived through his brush, translating the unseen rhythms of the mind into tangible shapes. Born in Sittard, he spent much of his life in 's-Hertogenbosch, developing a way of seeing that felt both deeply personal and strangely cosmic. His work was never a mere imitation of the world around him; instead, he sought to give shape to a subconscious reality. He looked toward the stars and the biological patterns of life to find his subjects, creating works that often felt surreal, as if they had been pulled directly from a dream.

His approach to painting was one of constant experimentation. He was not content to stay within the boundaries of a single medium, often moving between oil, gouache, acrylic, and watercolor. He even ventured into the delicate realms of pastels and drawings, always searching for the right way to capture the light and movement he felt within himself. This restless curiosity allowed him to reflect the shifting landscape of Dutch painting throughout much of the twentieth century.

      The Language of the Unseen

Titselaar’s practice was driven by a desire to map the invisible. He viewed the flat surface of a canvas as a space where cosmological and psychological forces could meet. His compositions often relied on the interplay of freeform shapes and color, where chance was allowed to participate in the creative process. This method gave his work a unique energy, making it difficult to categorize under a single label.

His technical range was vast, allowing him to explore different textures and depths:

      • Oil and gouache for heavy, layered textures
      • Watercolor and pastels for softer, more fluid expressions
      • Polyester light paintings that interacted with illumination
      • Graphic works and drawings that captured quick, essential movements

      A Legacy in Collections

Throughout his life, Titselaar remained a dedicated figure in the art community, often exhibiting his work in various centers across Noord-Brabant. His ability to blend visual imagery with poetic thought made his exhibitions memorable, sometimes even incorporating electronic music to complement the light and color on display. He was a painter who cared deeply about the permanence of his creations, often worrying about the future of his life's work and finding it difficult to part with the pieces he had labored over.

Today, his presence is felt in several important institutions. His works are held in various collections, including the Noordbrabants Museum in 's-Hertogenbosch, where his contributions to the local artistic history are preserved. From his early days in Sittard to his later years, his output remains a record of a man who spent his life trying to make the invisible visible.
