Early Life, Family and Training
Ida Baumann enters the scene in Herisau, Switzerland, on 12 March 1864. Born into the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, she grows up alongside her sister, Anna Baumann. The foundations of her technical skill begin in St. Gallen at the Gewerbeschule, where she undergoes her initial training.
The trajectory shifts in 1884. She moves to Darmstadt to continue her studies, seeking a broader perspective beyond her home region. This period of instruction serves as a bridge to the international stage. By 1885, the focus moves to Paris. She enters the Académie Colarossi, immersing herself in the rigorous atmosphere of the French capital. Here, the training becomes more specialized, setting the stage for her future presence in the Paris Salon.
Life and Work in England
A commission pulls her away from her Swiss roots in 1888. By 1890, the move to England is permanent. She travels through the landscapes of England and Scotland, establishing herself as a portrait painter. The work is steady. She moves into the heart of the art scene in 1891, settling in London.
In London, she rents the studio of the painter John Collier. This space becomes her professional base. Her reputation grows among the upper echelons of British society. She finds herself painting members of the English nobility, capturing their likenesses within the confines of her London studio. The focus remains sharp on the individual, a specialty that defines her period in the United Kingdom.
Later Years and Death
The momentum of her career shifts abruptly in 1894. A chronic illness disrupts her professional output, forcing a retreat from the London art scene. By 1896, she returns to Switzerland, seeking stability away from the intensity of her previous years. This period of recovery leads her to Basel, where she settles in 1900.
Despite the physical challenges that continue to shadow her life, she persists in her practice. She continues to paint, navigating the limitations imposed by her health. Her focus remains on the subjects that defined her earlier years, including portraits of political figures and scenes of daily life. Her later years are spent moving between the Italian Riviera and Heiden.
The end comes in Heiden. She dies on 24 August 1932.
Legacy and Artistic Recognition
Baumann’s presence in the art world was defined by her specialization in portraiture and scenes of everyday life. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, her brush captured the likenesses of Landammänner, the political office-holders of the Swiss cantons. These portraits placed her at the intersection of private character and public duty. Her ability to navigate these social spheres established her as a significant figure in Swiss art history, even as her personal health forced her into periods of withdrawal.
The passage of time nearly obscured her contributions. A chronic illness disrupted her momentum and, following her death, she drifted into relative obscurity. However, recent scholarship has pulled her back into the light. The 2020–21 exhibition Berufswunsch Malerin! at the Historisches und Völkerkundemuseum St. Gallen brought her work to a new audience, re-examining her place within the history of Swiss women in art. She remains recognized as a pioneer for the generations of female painters who followed her.
