      Early Life and Artistic Training

László Tatz was born on June 4, 1888, in Máriapócs, Hungary. His early years in the region preceded a formal immersion into the technical rigors of the Hungarian school. Between 1906 and 1917, he attended the Magyar Királyi Képzőművészeti Főiskola, where he studied under Ede Balló. This decade of training provided the foundational discipline that would define his approach to portraiture and figure painting.

Seeking to expand his perspective beyond the borders of Hungary, Tatz traveled to Paris. He enrolled at the École de la Chaumière, a move that brought him into contact with the specific methodologies of Lucien Simon and René Ménard. These instructors influenced his development as he moved away from his initial training toward a more international sensibility. His time in Paris allowed him to refine the skills necessary for the full-length portraits and character studies that would characterize much of his later output.

      Life and Work in Asia

In 1931, Tatz moved to Shanghai, where he began working alongside his brother, a sculptor. During this period, he settled into the international atmosphere of the treaty port, a place of significant economic and cultural activity. He remained in the city until 1937, when the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese war and the subsequent occupation of Shanghai by Japanese forces brought his time in China to an abrupt end. Following these turbulent years, he relocated to the Philippines, where he remained until his death in 1951.

His time in China left behind a series of focused studies of the local population. In 1936, he produced a portrait of a Shanghainese, a work noted for its striking contrast of colors that emphasized the expression of the face. Other works from this era include a portrait of a Chinese man, executed in oil on canvas, and a portrait of a Chinese woman titled "Uit Verre streken". These paintings reflect a period of intense observation during his years in the Far East.
