      A Life of Inquiry

Olaus Wormius, known to many as Ole Worm, was not a painter, but a man whose life was defined by the pursuit of knowledge through the physical world. Born in 1588 in Aarhus, Denmark, he grew up in a prosperous family; his father served as the mayor of the city. His early years were shaped by an expansive education that took him far beyond the borders of his home. Through a grand tour of Europe, he visited many different lands, including Italy, France, England, and the Netherlands, absorbing the sights and scientific curiosities of each region.

He was a man of many roles: a physician, a natural historian, and an antiquary. After earning a doctorate in medicine at the University of Basel in 1611, he settled into a career that would connect him to the highest levels of Danish society, eventually serving as the personal physician to King Christian IV. His academic life was equally busy, as he taught Latin, Greek, physics, and medicine at the University of Copenhagen. He lived through difficult times, notably remaining in Copenhagen to care for the sick during an epidemic of the bubonic plague, a period that ultimately claimed his life in 1654.

      The Cabinet of Wonders

Worm’s true passion lay in the gathering and studying of objects. He assembled a vast collection of specimens that filled his home in Copenhagen, creating what was known as a cabinet of curiosities. This collection was not merely a hoard of oddities but a structured attempt to understand the natural and man-made worlds. His room held an eclectic mix of items:

      • Natural specimens such as bones, rocks, minerals, and stuffed birds or animals.
      • Man-made artifacts including Roman jewellery, coins, and scientific instruments.
      • Ancient items like stone tools and runic inscriptions.

He approached these objects with a method that favored direct observation over the mere repetition of old myths. He wanted people to touch and see things for themselves to gain real knowledge. This practical approach led to significant scientific corrections. For instance, he used his research to prove that what many believed were unicorn horns were actually the tusks of narwhals. He also worked to disprove the idea that lemmings were creatures that spontaneously generated from the sky.

      A Lasting Legacy

The importance of Worm’s work was preserved through the publication of his catalogue, Museum Wormianum. Published posthumously in 1655 by his son, William, this book provided a detailed inventory of his collection. The volume included a large fold-out engraving that depicted his museum in all its detail, showing how he organized his treasures into categories of minerals, plants, animals, and artificial objects.

Though his personal museum was eventually dispersed after his death, the impact of his collecting remained. Some of his items found their way into the Royal Danish Kunstkammer and the Natural History Museum of Denmark. His work helped lay the groundwork for modern archaeology and natural history by encouraging the careful study of physical evidence. He left behind a tradition of looking closely at the world to find the truth hidden within its smallest parts.
