A Prodigy of Porvoo
The brush finds its mark early in the life of Ole Kandelin. Born in Porvoo, Finland, in 1920, he begins producing paintings at the age of fourteen. By sixteen, his practice becomes systematic. The young artist moves to Helsinki in 1937, finding a place within the Free Art School during the late 1930s and early 1940s. His early output carries the weight of surrealism and dreamlike landscapes, featuring angelic figures and scenery that feels like stage sets.
Life interrupts this rapid ascent. In 1940, Kandelin is drafted into the Finnish Army. The physical toll of war and disease soon follows; a diagnosis of tuberculosis in 1941 leads to his release from military service. He spends much of his remaining years in sanatoriums across Finland and Sweden, including Hessleby. Even within the confines of illness, the production does not cease. In Sweden, he works with an incredible intensity, sometimes completing a single painting every day.
The Shift Toward Abstraction
Kandelin’s style undergoes a radical transformation as he moves away from the figurative. He navigates through several distinct movements: Cubism, Surrealism, and Lyric Abstraction, eventually arriving at Abstract Expression and Concretism. He becomes a primary figure in breaking the hold of traditionalism in Finnish art, pushing toward a non-figurative language that was ahead of its time in his home country.
His visual vocabulary is shaped by the heavyweights of European modernism. One can see the structural echoes of Pablo Picasso and Alexander Archipenko, alongside the organic, fluid influences of Jean Arp and Joan Miró. The spiritual, rhythmic qualities of Wassily Kandinsky also find their way into his compositions. His preferred tools are delicate yet precise:
- Watercolour
- Pastel
- India ink
A Short, Intense Legacy
The trajectory of Kandelin’s career is truncated by his death in Helsinki in 1947. He is only twenty-six years old. His major breakthrough arrives just weeks before his passing, following a solo exhibition in Stockholm. Despite the physical inability to travel due to his declining health, the impact of his work reaches far beyond the borders of Finland.
His final works, such as Konstruktion and Abstraktion, signal a move toward the rigid structures of Concretism. He leaves behind a body of work that includes:
- Accordion player
- Floating Forms And White Triangles
- Red Star
- The Sphinx's Dream
