A Life Between Trade and Canvas

Oscar Cornu lived a life defined by the salt air and the steady rhythm of the Belgian coast. Born in Ostend, he was the son of Charles-Louis Cornu and Josèphe-Marie Martein. While many remember him for his brushwork, his daily reality was often tied to the commerce of the streets. He operated a small shop called Au Moulin on Kapellestraat, dealing in mercery goods. A small windmill hung as a sign above his storefront, a quiet nod to the life he led outside the studio. He married Sylvia Debedts in 1891, building a life in the very city that would provide his most enduring subjects.

His studio sat on an upper floor, offering a view of the Peperbusse, the tower of the old Sint-Pieterskerk. It was from this vantage point that he watched the world change. Though he was a merchant by trade, his heart belonged to the light hitting the water. He often sought refuge from the northern chill by wintering in Menton, finding a different kind of light to bring back to his canvases.

      The Coastal Subject

Cornu was a figurative painter who found his purpose in the movement of the sea and the stillness of the shore. His work often focused on the maritime life of Ostend and its surroundings. He captured the quiet tension of the tides and the heavy presence of ships against the horizon. His paintings were not mere decorations; they were observations of a specific way of life.

His repertoire included several distinct themes and locations:

      • The movement of tides and the waiting of the sea.
      • The busy activity of the harbor in Zeebrugge.
      • The small, quiet cottages found around Blankenberge.
      • The intersection of transport and tradition, such as the station and fishing boats in Ostend.

      Community and Legacy

In November 1908, Cornu helped shape the local art scene by becoming a co-founder of the Cercle Artistique d'Ostende. The group met in the studio of Jan De Clerck, creating a space for artists to gather and share their vision. This involvement showed a man deeply connected to his peers and his city. He was a man of two worlds, balancing the practicalities of a retail business with the quiet devotion of a painter. He passed away in Ostend in 1939, leaving behind a body of work that remains a window into the Belgian coast of a bygone era.
