The sixteenth century holds the traces of a Dutch painter moving through the corridors of Spanish power. Rodrigo de Holanda, known also as Diriksen, operates within the orbit of the Habsburgs. He finds himself positioned as a court painter under Philip II and later Philip III. His presence in Spain is marked by specific royal recognitions. In 1591, the crown grants him 100 ducats for services rendered. By 1596, another gift of 100 ducats arrives, a gesture prompted by his state of emergency.
His work extends into the very fabric of Spanish monumental architecture. He participates in the decoration of El Escorial, contributing to the visual identity of one of the era's most significant royal sites. While much of his personal history remains obscured by the passing of centuries, his brush captures the movement of conflict and the stillness of devotion.
The Art of Conflict and Devotion
Holanda specializes in the depiction of battle, a genre requiring a keen eye for the chaos of the front lines. His canvases record the mechanics of war and the shifting tides of territory. One notable work focuses on the Battle of Nijmegen from 1585, bringing the scale of that engagement to the viewer. Other compositions document specific military moments:

- Fire in the Town of Hayn
Beyond the smoke of combat, he engages with religious iconography. His 16th-century oil on wood piece, Virgin au Grill, presents a different facet of his technical range, moving from the wide landscapes of war to the intimate, heavy textures of sacred subjects.
