The Life and Artistic Journey of Simon Moulijn

Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Simon Moulijn was a prominent Dutch painter, draughtsman, and graphic artist. His formal education began at the Rotterdam Academy of Arts and continued at the Rijksakademie voor beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam, where he studied under August Allebé. During his formative years, he encountered fellow artists such as Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig, Richard Roland Holst, and Isaac Israëls. Following his studies, Moulijn engaged in a period of artistic wandering, living and working in various locations including Drenthe, Rotterdam, The Hague, De Steeg, and Renkum. In 1902, he married the poet Hester Henriëtte Jacoba Haitsma-Mulier, and the couple eventually settled in Laren, North Holland, where they lived in a house named “d’Eglantier” designed by Moulijn himself.

Moulijn's professional life included a significant tenure as a teacher at the Rotterdamsche Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten en Technische Wetenschappen in Rotterdam, a position he held from 1917 until his retirement in 1932. He was also deeply involved in the promotion of graphic arts, co-founding a painting school in Laren in 1910 and serving as secretary for the Vereeniging tot Bevordering der Grafische Kunst. His travels took him across Europe, including Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Luxemburg, France, and the Alpes Maritimes, resulting in a vast body of work spanning paintings, drawings, and lithographs.

      Style and Mastery of Lithography

The work of Simon Moulijn is characterized by a profound fascination with nature and the various atmospheres of the landscape. His artistic evolution saw him move from academic styles toward a unique figurative language and a form of "Dutch realism." He was often described as a "Painter of the romantic loneliness," frequently depicting woods from a distance or behind walls, as well as parks and controlled nature. While his early work explored symbolism and mysticism, his later years saw a return to regular portraiture.

Moulijn achieved particular distinction through his mastery of lithography, a medium that became central to his practice starting in 1893. His lithographic works often focused on:

His technical skill in lithography was recognized internationally, earning him honors such as a bronze medal at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition and a silver medal at the 1923 Exhibition of Dutch artists. His extensive collection of lithographs, totaling 189 works, remains a significant contribution to the Dutch art scene.
