The Life and Art of Stelios Votsis
Born in Larnaca, Stelios Votsis was a Cypriot artist who emerged as a leading figure of modern art on the island. His creative journey began early, as he staged exhibitions while still a student at the Pancypriot Commercial School. During his time at the Slade, Votsis was influenced by the Euston Road School. He was known for his exacting standards, a trait that led him to destroy almost all the paintings he produced during his student years. After overcoming financial hardship and a bout of tuberculosis, he graduated from the Slade in 1955.
Artistic Legacy and Contributions
Upon returning to Cyprus in 1955, Votsis co-founded the Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts, serving as its president at one time. His artistic style was best characterized as structural abstraction, expressed through both painting and drawing. He represented Cyprus on the international stage at numerous exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and the São Paulo Biennial. His work has been featured in various global locations, such as:
