The Formative Years and the Parisian Influence

Born in Niederkorn, Luxembourg, Théo Kerg’s early life was shaped by the quiet landscapes of south-western Luxembourg and the academic rigor of Esch-sur-Alzette. His path toward modernism began in 1929 when he moved to Paris, a city that would become a central pillar of his existence. He sought formal training at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, the Sorbonne, and the Institut d'Art et d'Archéologie. This period of intense study was furthered by a stay in Germany between 1932 and 1933, where he studied at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. It was here, under the guidance of Paul Klee and Oskar Moll, that his understanding of abstraction and form began to coalesce.

The mid-1930s saw him return to Luxembourg to serve as an art professor, a role he held until the shadows of war forced a change in his trajectory. In 1943, he resigned his position following the German invasion. The years that followed were marked by profound personal hardship; in 1944, he was arrested by the Luxembourgish allied militia and spent fifteen months in prison as a preventive measure. This period of confinement did not halt his creative momentum, though it certainly deepened the gravity of his lived experience.

Tactilism and the Evolution of Form

After leaving Luxembourg in 1946, Kerg eventually settled in Paris, where his work moved toward a unique philosophy he termed tactilism. This movement sought to create art that changed in appearance depending on the lighting, the atmosphere, and the specific environmental variables of the viewer. His practice was not limited to the canvas; he was a painter and a sculptor who sought to engage with the physical world in a way that transcended static imagery. His work was characterized by a sensitivity to how light interacts with surface and space.

His technical range was vast, extending from the intimate scale of book illustrations to the monumental scale of stained-glass windows. In 1975, he contributed significant stained-glass works to the Church of the Holy Spirit in Cents. His ability to manipulate light and material earned him several international distinctions, including:

      • The 1935 Gold Medal at the World Exhibition in Brussels
      • The 1950 Hallmark Prize in Paris
      • The 1951 First Prize at the Genoa Biennale
      • The 1953 Noceto Prize in San Marino
      • The 1971 Signatures Prize in the abstract category
      • The 1971 Grand Prize at the IVe Biennale azuréenne de peinture et de la sculpture in Cannes

      A Life of Constant Exhibition

Kerg was a prolific presence in the international art circuit, participating in over 300 group exhibitions and more than 150 individual shows. His work eventually found its way into the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, a recognition of his contribution to the development of modern art. He lived his final years in the Burgundy region, specifically in Chissey-en-Morvan, where he remained until his death in 1993. His legacy is found in the way he challenged the permanence of the visual image, insisting that art should react to the world around it.
