The Life and Work of Theo Mesker

Theo Mesker, born Theodorus Ludovicus Mesker, lived his life within the quiet streets of The Hague. He arrived in the city in February 1853 and remained there until his death on 28 August 1894. His presence in the local art scene was marked by his work as a Dutch drawer, a vocation he pursued during his active years from 1873 to 1894.

His hands were accustomed to the precision of drawing and the tactile nature of his tools. He spent his time observing the small, everyday movements of life, often working with chalk on paper or oil on canvas. There is a sense of stillness in the way he captured subjects, from the quietude of a tree study to the specific atmosphere of a bookstall in the Groote Markt. He moved through the city during a period when the light and the habits of the people provided a steady rhythm for his observations.

      Notable Works and Artistic Subjects

Mesker’s hand often turned toward the quiet, everyday movements of life in the Netherlands. In 1872, he produced The Lithographer Theo Mesker, an oil on canvas that captures a man at work. His interest in these local scenes extended to the Groote Markt in The Hague, where he depicted the bookstall of Jozef Blok in front of the Boterwaag. This composition shows the dealer leaning against his stall while his daughter helps under an umbrella, a scene of routine commerce and sunlight.

The artist also found subjects in more solitary or natural forms. He produced a tree study, titled Boomstudie, during the late 19th century using chalk on paper. His sketches often focused on specific, singular figures or natural textures. This is seen in Een non, a work executed in chalk on paper, and in The Book Stall, which appears in our catalog from about 1877.

Patrons and Provenance of His Art

The movement of Mesker's works through various hands reveals a steady presence in the art circles of The Hague. In 1872, the artist sold The Lithographer directly to Edward Jacobson in The Hague for NLG 125. Not long after, in April 1876, H.G. Tersteeg acquired a work in The Hague for FRF 120. These early transactions show his work finding its way into private collections during his active years.

As the decades passed, the ownership of his pieces continued to shift through auctions and private sales. On 19 May 1914, Abraham Preyer purchased a work in The Hague for FRF 130. By 1918, the focus moved toward Amsterdam, where C.F. Roos acquired a piece for NLG 130 on 5 March. These records trace the physical path of his drawings and paintings from his studio to the hands of collectors across the Netherlands.

Where to See His Works Today

Tracing the remains of Mesker's output requires visiting several institutions across the Netherlands. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam holds his work, including an oil on canvas from 1872. His presence in the city is also felt through the collections of the Jewish Historical Museum, which preserves a version of De Boekenstal. This specific composition, depicting a bookstall, is also held by the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague.

For those looking for his drawings and studies, the Kröller-Müller Museum contains his works on paper. These pieces, such as his chalk studies, offer a look at his hand through different materials. His traces are scattered between these public collections, moving from the quiet halls of Amsterdam to the galleries in The Hague.
