      Early Life, Family and Training

Theodor Matthei entered the world on January 31, 1857, in Marburg, Germany. He was born into a family with a notable lineage, being the grandson of Johann Friedrich Matthei. This connection to his family roots provided a foundation for a life that would eventually be defined by the brush and the canvas.

His formal education in the arts took place at the Kassel Academy. It was here that he began to refine his technical skills under the guidance of his teachers, Louis Kolitz and Hermann Knackfuss. These early years of study were essential in shaping his understanding of form and composition, preparing him for the professional path that lay ahead.

Artistic Activity in Willingshausen and Munich

During his formative years as a student, Matthei found a sense of community within the Willingshausen painters’ colony. Between 1881 and 1886, he spent his summer months there, drawn to the landscape and the company of fellow artists. It was in this setting that he formed lasting friendships with Emil Zimmermann and Adolf Lins. These connections were part of a larger circle of painters who gathered in the area, including his classmates Jean Konrad Bohlender and Heinrich Otto.

His time in Willingshausen helped shape his early approach to painting. While he initially focused on landscapes populated by small figures, his experiences in the colony provided a foundation for his later interest in the daily life of the Schwalm region. This period of growth was interrupted by a move to Munich, where he stayed for several months in 1887. This stay allowed him to experience a different artistic environment away from the quietude of the colony.

      Travels and Later Artistic Focus

As his career progressed, Matthei’s focus shifted from the quiet landscapes of his youth toward the lived experiences of the people around him. In his earlier years, he often populated his scenery with small figures, known as staffage, to give a sense of scale and life to the natural world. However, his interests eventually turned toward the social fabric of the Schwalm region. He began creating genre pictures that captured the everyday life and character of the local people, moving away from mere scenery to focus on the human element of his surroundings.

Around 1900, the light of the south drew him away from his familiar German landscapes. He traveled to Italy, where the change in climate and atmosphere offered a new way to see the world. During this time, he spent time in the area around Rome, where he worked on various landscape studies. These works focused on the bright, sunny qualities of the Italian countryside, capturing the specific light that defines the Mediterranean landscape.

      Key Works and Artistic Style

Matthei’s approach to painting shifted as his life moved through different landscapes. In his earlier years, he focused on landscapes that included staffage, adding small human figures to natural settings to give the scenes a sense of life and scale. This interest in the relationship between people and their surroundings eventually led him toward genre pictures, where he captured the everyday life of the Schwalm region. His brushwork and subject matter reflected a deep connection to the people and the quiet moments of rural existence.

His later years saw him turning toward the light of the south. After visiting Italy around 1900, he produced sunny landscape studies inspired by the environment around Rome. This period of his work shows a different side of his technique, moving from the structured scenes of his youth toward the bright, open atmosphere of the Mediterranean. His ability to capture light was a central part of his later output, whether he was painting the hills of Italy or the familiar paths of his home.

Several specific works illustrate this progression. In 1887, he produced Blossoms, a piece from his time in Munich. Later, in 1896, he created Figurative Auf Capri, reflecting his time spent in Italy. One of his most substantial works is The Skaters, an oil on canvas from 1913 that measures 100.5 x 74 cm. This painting remains a significant example of his ability to compose human activity within a specific setting, showing the technical skill he developed throughout his long career.
