A Life in Lines and Color

Born in Dallas in 1902, Verda Ligon lived a life defined by the quiet discipline of both the studio and the classroom. Her early training began in her hometown under Thomas M. Stell, a foundation that would support a long career as both a painter and a printmaker. She sought further refinement at Southern Methodist University, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Phoenix Art Institute in New York City. While her creative output was significant, she also dedicated forty years to the Dallas public school system as a teacher, balancing the demands of pedagogy with the requirements of her craft.

Her technical range allowed her to move between the heavy texture of oil on Masonite and the delicate precision of lithography. In her printmaking, such as the hand-colored lithograph Plantation Lily from the 1930s, she demonstrated a controlled command of light and form. Her work often reflected the landscapes and botanical subjects of her surroundings, capturing the specific character of the Texas environment through a lens of careful observation.

      Breaking the Mold

Ligon was not merely a practitioner of her craft; she was an active participant in the shifting social dynamics of the Texas art scene. During a period when the local art community was largely dominated by men, she sought to create space for female voices. In 1939, she became one of eight women who organized the Printmakers Guild, an entity that would eventually become known as the Texas Printmakers. This collective was established to provide an alternative to the male-dominated Lone Star Printmakers, ensuring that women had a structured venue for exhibition and professional recognition.

Her professional affiliations and contributions included:

      • Membership in the Frank Reaugh Art Circle.
      • Co-founding the Printmakers Guild in 1939.
      • Exhibiting her work throughout the state of Texas.

      The Dallas Legacy

By the time of her death in 1970, Ligon had left a permanent mark on the regional art history of Dallas. Her presence in the local scene was felt through her dual roles as an educator and an artist who challenged established hierarchies. Her paintings, including Jimson Weed, found their way into permanent collections such as the Dallas Museum of Art, securing her place in the visual record of the mid-century American South. She remains a figure of quiet importance, remembered for her technical skill and her role in expanding the possibilities for women in the Texas art community.
