Born in 1808, William Davison was a British artist whose career spanned much of the first half of the nineteenth century. In his left hand, he holds a cello, while his right hand is occupied with a pinch of snuff. The arrangement of the scene is completed by a table upon which his right arm rests, holding a bow, music, and a snuff-box.
Beyond his portraiture, Davison’s output included various studies of landscape and maritime life. His watercolors often focused on the intersection of nature and human industry, such as a scene featuring a covered wagon positioned near a stone mill. Other works captured the movement of the sea, including depictions of boats off the coast.
